Following an impressive 34-21 victory over the USA last weekend, defense coach Franzel September emphasized that the team needs to look ahead, as major matches against Ireland and New Zealand lie ahead of them.
Team Experience and Goals
Although the heroic performances of the Springbok women's team at last year's World Cup will not soon be forgotten, Franzel September believes this experience should only serve as a foundation for future achievements. The Bok women's team reached 10th place in the World Rugby rankings after a decade spent at the bottom of the table, and now they have access to matches against Top-10 teams.
September noted that following the positive assessment of the World Cup and the start of the current year, they set a goal to play against leading teams. He added that achieving this requires being prepared and conducting proper preparation. The win against the 9th-ranked USA with a score of 34-21 was part of this preparation, and he is confident that results will follow if the current level of preparation is maintained.
Development Strategy
It was crucial to continue developing after the successes at the World Cup, where the Bok Women reached the quarterfinals for the first time, defeating Italy and Brazil. Initially, the team participated in the African Cup, which helped strengthen squad depth and build momentum after a good provincial tournament. However, the match against the USA was a full test match, perfectly suited for preparing for the upcoming series against New Zealand. The team's goal is to reach the next World Cup in 2029, and the current steps are part of this plan.
September explained that the sequence of matches is important: first two tests against the USA, then a game against Ireland (fifth in the world ranking), and subsequently against the Black Ferns, so improvement is necessary in every game. He insists that they must constantly do their homework and be ready at any moment to seize opportunities.
Importance of Constant Improvement
In the coach's opinion, to maintain an upward trajectory, the Bok Women must play against the strongest opponents, as games against weaker teams can be counterproductive. September explained that rugby is a pressure game. If the team continues to face challenges, strives for improvement, and gives its maximum effort, it will achieve positive results. He concluded: 'Everything has gone well so far, but we cannot relax and think that we have reached the top. We must constantly remind ourselves that there is still much ahead, and that there are stronger opponents.'
Focus on Defense
Before the second match against the USA in Loftus Versfeld, September focused on the need to improve defensive actions. He noted that late in the second half, they allowed the opponent three easy tries that did not require much effort from them. These errors were identified in the review, and responsibility has been taken for them. Nevertheless, he also highlighted positive aspects in the defense, noting that the team is proud of its ability to hold the line.
September acknowledged that the American team will be better adapted after two weeks in Hyvel, and they will also get their first test for analysis. He agreed that the opponents will become more difficult and added that they will try to 'suffocate' their opponents by using their strengths to see the team's reaction.
