The women's volleyball team from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) successfully defended its South African University Sport (USSA) title, securing a second consecutive championship victory despite losing the final match to the Durban University of Technology (DUT) team.
This success marks another significant milestone for the team, which previously won the national title in 2025, thereby cementing its place among the country's leading university volleyball teams. The participation of three young players—Anelle Masondo, Hannah Enoch, and Sreya Rajagopal—who played in the USSA final for the first time, was particularly noteworthy as they contributed to the championship run.
Head coach Marcellino Harold noted that this year's preparation differed significantly from the previous one because several senior players left the team after completing their studies. He explained that last year's squad consisted of experienced seniors, whereas this season incorporated first-year students, creating a blend of new and proven talent.
Harold emphasized that the focus of training sessions was on boosting the confidence of the junior players and helping them believe in their ability to win the tournament. The coach described defending the title as an even more emotional and valuable achievement, noting that the coaching staff had to find the right balance for effective interaction between experienced and young athletes.
Co-captains Busisive Maposa and Selina Naidu described Harold's leadership style as demanding yet supportive throughout the tournament. Maposa, who has led the team for the past three years, reported that this season's preparation was more intensive: the team played six qualifying matches before traveling to the USSA Games while simultaneously mentoring younger players. She stated: 'We worked hard, did everything possible, and enjoyed the journey. It was our team spirit that helped us overcome difficulties!'
The team's success was further recognized by three players earning spots on the national squad: Bontle Finger, Vishaya Naidu, and Jaden Mudli will now represent South Africa. Furthermore, UKZN dominated the individual awards: Maposa received the Best Spiker award, Vishaya Naidu was named Best Blocker, and Jaden Mudli was recognized as Best Libero.
Regarding the future, Harold announced that the team will take a short break before returning to prepare for the Tongaat Opens at the end of this month and the National Club Championships. He also praised co-captains Maposa and Naidu for leading the team to back-to-back titles and for developing the next generation of athletes.
UKZN Vice-President of Corporate Relations, Dr. Norma Zondo, congratulated the team on the achievement, stating that the victory reflects the university's commitment to athletic excellence. She remarked: 'Our women's team winning the USSA title for the second consecutive year is a remarkable achievement. It reflects their dedication, resilience, and culture of excellence that defines UKZN.' Dr. Zondo also expressed pride in the three students selected for the national squad and congratulated them on their well-deserved recognition.
