Bilbao Airport intends to dispose of two small aircraft that have been stored in one of its hangars for a long time. These flying machines occupy space that could be used for other purposes.
Auction Conduct
The La Paloma airport administration has organized a public auction, with the starting price set at zero euros. Since there is no minimum bidding threshold, the package of two aircraft can be purchased for as little as one euro or even a few cents, provided there are no other buyers.
Aircraft Specifications
The two aircraft up for sale are a Cessna 177RG Cardinal and a Socata Rallye 180 GT. The first aircraft is of North American origin and was taken off the assembly line in 1975. The second aircraft, of French manufacture, made its first flight in December 1977.
These aircraft were used for advertising purposes for many years, flying along the coasts of Galicia and Cantabria with branding applied. Luis Delgado, a mechanic at Bilbao Airport, recalls that they were used in advertising campaigns for companies such as El Corte Inglés or Galerías Preciados.
Reasons for Discounted Sale
According to the publication El Correo, both aircraft have significant damage and signs of wear. Restoring these models would cost almost as much as buying a similar aircraft in good condition, even a used one. If the airport cannot sell them, the most likely outcome will be sending them to the scrapyard.
According to the Spanish publication, the Socata aircraft, painted in bright yellow colors, is practically dismantled. The Cessna, although intact, has not flown for more than ten years.
Removing the aircraft from the hangar, reintroducing them into service with necessary guarantees and amenities, and completing the documentation in the relevant authorities, will likely cost more than purchasing used aviation equipment.
Historical Value and Availability
Despite this, both aircraft possess a certain historical and sentimental value, which prompted La Paloma to give them a second chance by organizing the sale. El Correo emphasizes that although the models are old, they are very valuable, and soon they will be available for purchase by anyone interested in the city of Lu, where Bilbao Airport is located.
