The President of Timor has fully supported the working program concluded with Australia. President José Ramos-Horta stated that this program is extremely important for the national economy as it ensures a significant inflow of funds into the country.
Signing the Agreement and Economic Contribution
These words were spoken during the ceremony signing the declaration between the Government and 135 Timorese workers who will soon be sent to work in Australia. José Ramos-Horta emphasized that the receipt of these funds into Timor-Leste contributes to the development of the national economy by increasing consumer demand and purchases.
Significance of Labor Migration
According to World Bank data, labor migration is gaining increasingly vital importance in Timor-Leste's development strategy. Remittances from these workers exceed 11% of the non-oil Gross Domestic Product. The President of Timor reported, citing data from the Central Bank of Timor-Leste, that last year Timorese citizens sent about $210 million USD to the country (equivalent to approximately 184 million euros).
Program Prospects
According to the Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment, Rogeiro Mendonça, more than 25,300 Timorese residents have participated in the working program with Australia since 2012. Authorities from Australia and Timor agreed at the beginning of this year to work on increasing the number of Timorese workers gaining access to employment opportunities in Australia under the Australian workforce mobility program by 2027 and 2028, setting a target of 10,000 people.
