Following the announcement of the Username feature, which is currently under debate and has not been launched, WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that may appeal to many users. This upcoming feature will allow users to know if their contact is online without opening the chat.
How the new indicator will work
WhatsApp plans to display a small green marker on a contact's profile picture. This marker will serve as visual confirmation that the user is currently using WhatsApp. When the user leaves the application, this marker will automatically disappear.
Changes in status display
Previously, information about someone being online was displayed simply with the word 'Online' and required opening the chat. Now, the company intends to replace this text with a green marker, allowing for an instant understanding of the contact's activity. The company believes this will significantly improve the user experience.
Limitations and privacy settings
It is important to note that this feature will not be visible to everyone. If a user has configured their privacy settings to hide their 'online' status, the green marker on their profile will not appear. WhatsApp has integrated this feature with existing privacy settings: if you have not allowed anyone to see your online status, the new icon will also not be displayed.
Current status and prospects
Currently, the green marker is only available on the chat information screen, not in the chat list or on the home screen. However, according to reports, WhatsApp may expand the use of this feature to other parts of the application in the future to simplify identifying active contacts. It is worth mentioning that similar features already exist in messengers such as Facebook Messenger, Telegram, and Discord. Since the feature is in the beta testing phase, it is difficult to predict the exact launch date, as companies sometimes abandon features after testing.
