Creating a Traditional Guesthouse in Sainj Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Shan ‘e’ Ghar Homes, a picturesque guesthouse located in Sainj Valley, surrounded by the Great Himalayan National Park, was built in the traditional Kath-Kuni style. This property, which could serve as a film set, features eight rooms with attached guest bathrooms.

Construction Process and Architecture

Suchata (38) and Vikas Tyagi (40) spent almost three years building this guesthouse. Suchata explains that the traditional construction method has existed for centuries, using wood, stone, and mud as primary materials, without using cement. This structure is earthquake-resistant, which is particularly important for hilly areas.

The materials used in this technique provide good thermal insulation, maintaining a comfortable temperature inside regardless of the outside weather. Kath-Kuni is a local style characteristic of the mountains of North India, involving the alternation of wooden beams and stones to create structures up to seven stories high. This method was passed down orally from generation to generation and is used in the construction of many ancient temples in the region.

Escaping City Life

Suchata and Vikas, who are city dwellers, were drawn to the beauty of the region in early 2018. Although Vikas continues to work at a software firm in Delhi, Suchata is happy to leave the hustle and bustle of city life behind. Despite lacking architectural education or construction experience, the couple spent months researching and collaborating with local stonemasons to bring their dream to life.

Vikas emphasizes that the guesthouse is their home, and they are willing to share part of their residence with visitors. While the spirit of traditional architecture is preserved, minor modifications were made to attract a wider audience. Suchata notes that local homes usually do not have an attached toilet, which is located several meters from the main building; for the convenience of guests, they built toilets inside the house.

Even inside the property, the couple used recycled pallets to make beds and baskets that also serve as trash bins. Initially, when Suchata visited Sainj Valley alone in 2018, it was 'love at first sight,' and she decided to create a retreat here, not expecting it to become such an integral part of her life.

Restrictions and Hospitality

Despite the strong desire to build a home, the process proved challenging. Since the region is a UNESCO World Heritage site, there are certain restrictions. Suchata added that the flora and fauna of the region cannot be disturbed or damaged, loud music listening is prohibited, and care must be taken not to disturb local residents.

The comfortable and spacious cottages offer an ideal combination of authentic design using local materials. The food served at the guesthouse is often local and authentic, and Suchata carefully selects dishes for her guests. The couple asks guests to remember that they are in someone's home, as some guests may expect services typical of regular hotels and resorts, and they constantly have to remind them that they are experiencing a stay in their home.

The cost for one night at the property is 3,500 rupees, including breakfast. Suchata points out that guests usually stay for a minimum of four nights to fully experience the essence of the place, enjoy trips to nearby villages, clean air and water, and fresh produce. At the guesthouse, guests can try the traditional Himachali Dham dish.

Suchata also warns that the upkeep and maintenance of the guesthouse cost more than its construction. The most difficult part is the post-construction work, which requires constant treatment of mud and ensuring the absence of insects naturally attracted by clay.
