By attending the Afro Nation Portugal festival, the author realized the power of African music on a global scale. Previously, he had wondered why people would travel halfway around the world to see artists who could be heard in South Africa.
Expectations vs. Reality
Although the author had seen many videos and photos of the fun happening in Praia da Rocha in Portimão and expected a certain level of impression after being invited by IOL to attend a performance by a Sony Music Africa superstar, the actual experience turned out to be completely unexpected and thrilling.
The presence of people speaking a South African dialect, or watching them dressed in Bafana Bafana team shirts or local designer clothing, served as a reminder that they were abroad. Although South Africans are usually friendly, a special warmth was felt when greeting compatriots on the beach in Portimão or during a shared dance after instantly recognizing each other.
Musical Diversity of the Festival
From the airport to the festival itself, South Africans were everywhere at Afro Nation. However, the most memorable moment was how people with different accents from all over the world sang the lyrics of their author's home country, which was incredibly exciting.
The lineup was dominated by South African artists such as Zee Nxumalo, MaWhoo, Scotts Maphuma, Focalistic, Kelvin Momo, DJ Maphorisa, Jazzwrld, Thukuthela, Amaroto, Njelic, and others, showing the true meaning of the expression 'South Ahh' to the world. The Piano People stage transformed into a full-fledged dance party thanks to the performances of top amapiano artists. The author noted that South Africans know how to dance, but there are other countries they can compete with.
International Stars and Atmosphere
The author initially thought that one did not need to travel to enjoy music, but Afro Nation Portugal dispelled this notion. The festival delighted visitors with a star-studded lineup featuring African titans, making the ticket price even more justified. The sunsets in Portimão added magic to the festival, making one forget about time. The author, who was usually ready to go to bed after 10:00 PM, managed to stay until 11:00 PM waiting for Wizkid's performance.
Afro Nation provided an opportunity to see not only favorite African stars but also international performers. Numerous stages created a difficult choice. After missing the American rapper Gunna's performances in Mzansi, he was happy to see him on stage. Grammy winner Kehlani also performed, and the chance to loudly sing along to the song 'Folded' became an unforgettable memory.
Fashion and Festival Spirit
Although music is the heart of the festival, fashion is the center of attention. The atmosphere of the festival is characterized by a positive attitude towards the body: it is a place where you can leave all complexes at the airport and wear a bold outfit you would never wear at home. An atmosphere of openness prevailed around the stages and kiosks, where thousands of beautiful men and women displayed themselves.
The founders of Afro Nation and partner teams created an amazing platform that celebrates African heritage and music. Regardless of origin, visitors feel like welcome guests, even when in a foreign country. It is no wonder that after Wizkid's performance, banners with QR codes and links to buy tickets for 2027 appeared, as this is a unique experience that people will want to repeat.
Tyla and Burna Boy Performances
The reality that Tyla is a global superstar dawned on the author as he approached the entrance of Afro Nation when he accidentally heard someone singing her music and thought, 'Do you know our girl too?'. The star, born in Johannesburg, performed on the first day of the three-day festival and led the lineup alongside other African superstars such as Burna Boy, Asake, and Wizkid.
Tyla's performance gave the author goosebumps as he admired the skill of the two-time Grammy winner and understood that she is truly a superstar of her generation. There is a reason why people attend concerts of their favorite artists repeatedly, and the author can attest that every such experience is unique.
Burna Boy's performance at Afro Nation differed from his performance in South Africa at the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival in 2022, which remained forever in the author's heart. Although the Nigerian superstar could make the crowd wait for her to come on stage, when it happened, she was ready to give a full show. His performance coincided with his birthday, July 2nd, and celebrating this event in front of an audience that appreciated his artistry was the perfect conclusion.
