The question is not whether Vaibha will be the next Sachin, but whether Indian cricket will dare to give its chosen young talent an opportunity at the appropriate time.

Team Selection and Discussions

In 1989, when forming the team for the tour to Pakistan, the management faced a complex task. The squad included players such as Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, rising Waqar Younis, and Abdul Qadir. Sending a 16-year-old teenager on such a tour was not an easy decision for any selection committee.

Later, Akash Lal, who was a member of that selection committee, told in an interview that the selection of Sachin Tendulkar was not unanimous. In the five-member committee, long debates took place, and the decision in favor of Sachin was made by a majority vote of 3 to 2. Some committee members believed that sending such a young batsman to Pakistan would be premature. The other viewpoint was that if a player possesses exceptional talent, they should be given a chance rather than waiting.

Proof Through Results

Sachin's selection was not the result of an emotional decision; it was backed by consistent performances. In the 1987-88 Ranji season, he was selected for the Mumbai team but did not make the main squad, remaining a reserve fielder. In the following season, on December 11, 1988, he debuted in the Ranji Trophy and scored an unbeaten hundred against Gujarat in his first match. Throughout the entire 1988-89 Ranji season, he scored 583 runs.

After this, the selectors did not delay their decision. About a year later, on November 15, 1989, 16-year-old Sachin debuted for India in a series match against Pakistan in Karachi. The team management, including the chairman of the selection committee Raj Singh Dungarpur and captain Krishnamachari Srikant, believed in the talent of the young Sachin. He convinced the selectors by scoring a hundred in the Irani Cup, which showed that he was ready not only for talent but also for the big stage.

Comparison with Vaibha

No one knew then that this teenager would eventually score 100 international centuries, become the face of Indian cricket for 24 years, and receive the title of 'God of Cricket'. However, it is clear that if the selectors had only chosen safe options that day, the history of Indian cricket could have unfolded differently.

It cannot be argued that the circumstances of Vaibha Suryavanshi and Sachin Tendulkar are identical. Sachin reached the national team through consistent performances in first-class club cricket. Vaibha attracted the attention of the selectors through junior cricket and the IPL. Therefore, a direct comparison of these two stories is inappropriate.
