A growing debate continues surrounding the film 'Satluj' (formerly known as Punjab 95), starring Diljit Dosanjh. After the film was removed from the ZEE5 platform just 48 hours after its premiere on G5, many cultural figures have openly voiced their opinions on the matter.
Gul Panag's Stance
Actress Gul Panag raised questions regarding the film's removal, stating that India should not be afraid of difficult periods of its history. She emphasized that while films can be criticized and debated, a ban is never the solution. Gul shared her experience observing the period of terrorism in Punjab, mentioning instances of people being killed while descending from buses and the baseless harassment of youth.
In her view, it is precisely such experiences that lead her to believe that stories related to difficult chapters of history must be accessible to the general public. She clarified that cinema is not a history textbook but merely presents one point of view, and disagreement with it should lead to discussion, not prohibition. Furthermore, Gul Panag noted that Punjab has overcome separatism with great difficulty, and assuming that one film can bring back this ideology underestimates the strength of Punjab.
Support from Jasbir Jassi
For his part, Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi highly praised the work of director Hani Trehan and actor Diljit Dosanjh, posting a video on Instagram. He called the creation of a film about such sensitive and humanitarian themes, like the history of Jaswant Singh Kalda, an act of great courage. Jassi noted that the film is currently being actively discussed everywhere, which was not the case with other old Punjabi films.
The singer congratulated Hani Trehan for raising an extremely important issue related to humanity and Punjab. Jasbir Jassi stated that people who follow the path of truth are obliged to present it to the public. He also commended Diljit Dosanjh for the bravery in tackling such a delicate subject.
Questions Regarding the Film Ban
Jasbir Jassi questioned the decision to ban and remove the film from ZEE5, asking himself: why was the film banned? He suggested that people are afraid of the truth. The singer stressed that speaking the truth is not easy, and accepting it is even harder. He urged those who constantly criticize Punjab to understand that this is not about politics, but about humanity. Jasbir Jassi reminded that people like Jaswant Singh Kalda sacrificed everything for humanity, and their stories must be known to the world.
He also mentioned that he is in America, and everywhere he goes, people talk about the film 'Satluj'. Jasbir Jassi added that his mentors always taught him to stand on the side of truth, and he wants to continue transmitting this message.
The Core of the Conflict Surrounding 'Satluj'
The story of 'Satluj' is inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Kalda. The film is based on events in Punjab in 1995 and sheds light on allegations that the Punjab police allegedly killed thousands of people and secretly conducted their burials. It is reported that before the theatrical release, the censorship board demanded 125 amendments, which the creators refused to accept, leading to the postponement of the film premiere. Three years later, the film was released on ZEE5 but was removed from the platform within two days, sparking active debates among members of the film industry.
