More than five inmates died between June 15 and June 25 due to insufficient medical care in Venezuelan prisons. According to OVP, these deaths once again highlight the severity of the sanitary crisis in Venezuelan correctional facilities.
Rights and Detention Conditions
OVP noted that this is not just about people suffering from illnesses, but about detainees who have the right to timely medical assistance, proper treatment, and conditions of detention that respect human dignity.
Causes of Health Deterioration
Additional deaths in penitentiary institutions confirm the progressive deterioration of the right to health within the Venezuelan prison system. OVP points out that tuberculosis, respiratory diseases, cardiovascular pathologies, and other illnesses are exacerbated in detention centers due to a shortage of medications, delays in hospital transfers, lack of specialized medical care, and unsanitary conditions, which puts the lives of detainees at risk.
Demands and Statistics
At the same time, the Prosecutor's Office rightly notes that it does not demonstrate through concrete actions that the protection of prisoners' human rights is a priority of its management, and institutional silence in the face of this reality contributes to perpetuating impunity. OVP demands independent investigations into each of these deaths and immediate measures to resolve the sanitary crisis in prisons and police cells.
According to OVP data, 26,694 people are held in Venezuela in facilities designed for only 15,096, leading to critical overcrowding at a rate of 176.83%. These figures do not include citizens detained in temporary police cells. In addition to overcrowding, the Venezuelan prison system is experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis characterized by detentions without trial, state-sanctioned deaths in custody, inhumane conditions, and lack of access to basic services.
Political Situation
Furthermore, according to various non-governmental organizations, there are at least 400 political prisoners in Venezuela, including 38 foreigners, four of whom are Portuguese.
