In May, domestic flights in Chennai demonstrated the highest percentage of on-time departures among the ten busiest airports in India. According to data published on Tuesday by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), this figure was 92.2% for flights operated by IndiGo, Air India Group, Akasa, Alliance Air, and SpiceJet.
Punctuality Rankings
Following Chennai in punctuality were Kolkata (84.7%), Hyderabad (84.4%), Bengaluru (82.3%), and Kochi (81.5%). Ahmedabad and Lucknow ranked sixth with a rate of 76.7%, and Guwahati followed with 75.3%. At the bottom of the ranking, positions six through ten, were Delhi (72.6%) and Mumbai (70.5%), meaning that these two Indian airports ended up at the very end of the domestic flight punctuality metrics.
Airline Performance
Among airlines, IndiGo (82.8%), Akasa (78.3%), and Air India Group (74.5%) led in OTP (On Time Performance) for domestic flights across the ten major airports. SpiceJet recorded the worst result, with its punctuality rate being only 26.5%, which is slightly more than a quarter of all its flights.
Domestic Tourism Dynamics
In May, there was a significant increase in domestic air travel during the summer vacation period, with over 15 million people flying across the country. This figure is nearly 10% higher than the 14 million passengers who flew in the same month last year. It should be noted that less than 14 million domestic passengers were recorded in April, making the jump in May quite substantial.
Overall Market Growth
Despite international travel remaining difficult due to airspace closures, high fares, and a weak rupee, domestic tourism also positively impacted India's hospitality companies, although overall growth remained moderate. From January to May 2026, 73 million domestic passengers were registered, which is approximately 2% more than the 71 million in the same period last year.
IndiGo's Market Share
In May, IndiGo's market share in the domestic transport segment was 64.9%, while Air India Group held a 25.6% share, Akasa accounted for 5.8%, and other smaller carriers provided the remaining 3.7%.
