The arrival of Renaldo Liner, who currently ranks fourth on the Bafana Bafana national team's goalkeeper list, is set to intensify competition within the Kaizer Chiefs squad. His transfer could bring mixed consequences for both the club and veteran goalkeeper Bruce Bwum.
Arrival of New Goalkeeper
Liner joined Amakhosi on Monday, immediately bolstering the goalkeeping department. The 28-year-old footballer possesses extensive top-division experience, having played for Cape Town Spurs, Maritzburg United, and recently, Sekhukhune United.
Last season, Liner demonstrated impressive form for Sekhukhune United, which attracted the attention of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Bruce shortly before the FIFA World Cup. However, a poor match against Stellenbosch FC, where two costly errors proved decisive, cost him a chance in the final World Cup squad. Instead, Bruce selected Sipho Chen and Ricardo Gossa as backups for Ronwen Williams.
Transfer Details
Despite this setback, it was widely expected that Babina Noko would retain the goalkeeper and extend his contract. However, under unusual circumstances, Sekhukhune failed to meet the registration deadline, allowing Liner to become a free agent. Although his former club reportedly worked around the clock to convince him to sign a new contract, Chiefs seized the opportunity by offering him a generous deal and significant career growth on a free transfer basis.
Now based in Naturena, Liner is expected to be a serious rival to current number one Brandon Petersen. He brings a unique skill set characterized by sharp reflexes, elite saves, and excellent situational awareness during one-on-one play.
Bwum's Situation
Liner's arrival undoubtedly strengthens Chiefs' goalkeeping unit, but it may push Bwum further down the pecking order, potentially moving him from the bench to the stands on match days. Bwum had a disappointing season last year, featuring in only five league matches, recording two clean sheets while conceding five goals. His brief time in the starting lineup was only possible because Petersen was sidelined due to a medical procedure.
As a product of the club's youth system, Bwum was expected to join the illustrious line of academy goalkeepers who later dominated the local league. When club legend Itumeleng Khune earned his first jersey, the club's youth program rightly received praise for developing his talent. According to Khune, however, Bwum did not fully embrace his advice that, although they were teammates, they were fierce rivals for a spot in the squad, and that training demanded relentless work ethic for mutual advancement.
Prospects for the New Season
Bwum recently signed a contract extension that keeps him at the club for at least another season. He needs to seize this opportunity with all his might. With the arrival of new head coach Fernando Da Cruz and goalkeeper coach Olivier Sorena, every player starts the preseason on a fresh slate. At 31, Bwum has a golden chance to change his destiny. However, if he fails to impress the new technical team, this could be his last season in Naturena, as Liner appears ready to cement his place in the squad. All eyes are on Bwum to fight for his place in the Chiefs squad.
