Venezuela has announced the imminent resumption of commercial air flights in Caracas. The responsible party stated in a message published on the Telegram platform that an order was given for the 'immediate activation of an alternative plan.'
Airport Restoration
This plan will allow commercial operations to be restored using a parallel runway available at Simón Bolívar International Airport. The announcement was made after visiting the airport located in La Guaira, north of Caracas, to assess the damage caused by two earthquakes.
Consequences of Natural Disasters
According to Venezuelan authorities, the tremors resulted in the death of over 3,500 people, thousands of displaced persons, and an undetermined number of missing persons, especially in the La Guaira region, which was most affected by the earthquakes.
Current Situation and Aid
Simón Bolívar International Airport, the largest in Venezuela, is currently operating only partially and is being used for humanitarian flights. Furthermore, it was noted that US military personnel are cooperating in the process of reopening the airport and repairing the Port of La Guaira, which was also damaged by the earthquakes, to facilitate the arrival of humanitarian aid, food, and equipment.
Characteristics of the Earthquakes
Earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 occurred 200 kilometers from Caracas with less than one minute between them, followed by hundreds of aftershocks, according to information from the U.S. Geological Survey.
