South Africa's international air connections are strengthening due to two significant changes that simplify travel to the country. Last week, a new direct service was launched between Brazil and Cape Town, and Emirates airline increased its schedule in Cape Town by adding a daily flight from Dubai.
LATAM Route Launch from Brazil
The Chilean carrier LATAM Airlines has officially started a direct service between São Paulo and Cape Town. The first flight arrived at Cape Town International Airport on Friday. Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille welcomed this new route, calling it a substantial step in strengthening ties in tourism, trade, and investment between South Africa and South America.
According to De Lille, this connection aligns with the government's broader strategy to improve international air access, implemented under the Tourism Route Development Marketing Plan. She emphasized that developing air routes goes beyond simply adding flights, as it contributes to economic growth, job creation, and increasing South Africa's accessibility to the world.
Growth in Bilateral Travel
The new route comes amid continued growth in travel between South Africa and Brazil. In May 2026, the number of visitors from Brazil increased by over 40% compared to the same month last year, making South America one of the fastest-growing markets for the country. This growth was made possible after the signing of a tourism cooperation agreement between South Africa and Brazil earlier this year, which provides support for improving air connectivity and joint promotional initiatives.
Furthermore, South African Tourism is collaborating with LATAM to promote South Africa among partners in the Brazilian tourism sector.
Expansion of Emirates Services
Cape Town also received an increase in capacity from Emirates, which introduced a third daily flight between Dubai and the Mother City. This new flight provides both passenger and cargo capacity, increasing the number of available seats and strengthening ties between South Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
The Tourism Portfolio Committee noted that the additional service will make South Africa more accessible to international guests, investors, and the South African diaspora. Committee Chairperson Ronald Nalumango stated that the expansion occurs at a crucial time for the tourism sector. She noted that the new flight will support recovery efforts, open up new markets in the Middle East and Asia, and strengthen trade and cargo links beneficial to agriculture, manufacturing, and small businesses.
Significance for Travelers
These two announcements mark another positive step in the recovery of South African aviation and its growing global connectivity. For travelers, an increase in flights usually means more direct routes and convenience, improved availability of seats during peak periods, better connections from key international markets, and greater competition, which can eventually lead to lower fares. As airlines continue to expand their networks in South Africa, visiting places like Cape Town is becoming increasingly accessible for guests from South America, the Middle East, and other regions.
