The Minister of Basic Education announced the successful completion of the sanitation program in schools. This initiative, launched in 2018, has been an important step in South Africa's efforts to ensure safe and adequate sanitary conditions for all students.
Sanitation Achievement
Thanks to this program, all 3372 schools included in the Education Sanitation Initiative are now equipped with proper sanitary facilities. This achievement brings hope to communities that have long suffered from unsafe toilet conditions.
Human Rights Group's Demands
Nevertheless, the human rights organization Section27 insists that this success should not be seen as a final point, but rather as a stimulus for further action. The organization has demanded a comprehensive national audit of school sanitation conditions across the country.
Section27 has actively advocated for safer school environments since the tragic drowning of five-year-old Michael Komape in a pit latrine in Limpopo in 2014. A representative of the organization, Pearl Nikodemus, emphasized the critical importance of preventing such dangers for any student.
Calls to Action and Risks
Nikodemus stated: 'We need accurate data so we can understand how far we have come. We welcome progress, but we do not want to overestimate achievements.' She added that having even one student or one school unaccounted for means potential danger for hundreds of pupils.
Despite the government noting this success, the call for a national audit is gaining increasing importance. Nikodemus argued that such an audit must cover all educational institutions, especially those located in rural areas where resources may be more limited, to ensure an accurate assessment of the situation.
Unsafe sanitary conditions in some schools have long been a problem in South Africa, exposing students not only to health risks but also to emotional and psychological trauma. Although the recent government initiative has received widespread approval, Section27's demand for a thorough inspection will help determine whether the celebrations mark a new era in educational safety or if additional interventions are required.
