Workers in Samsung's mobile phone, television, and home appliance sectors are planning a protest in South Korea to contest the significant difference in bonuses offered by the company. The event is scheduled for July 16, near the company's headquarters in Suwon, and aims to address the recent agreement that secured significantly larger bonuses for employees in the semiconductor division.
Difference in compensation packages
According to Reuters, the union representing employees of the Device Experience (DX) division reports that members of this area are expected to receive approximately 6 million won in shares in 2026, which corresponds to about R$ 20,430 at the current exchange rate. In contrast, employees in the semiconductor division have access to bonuses that can reach 600 million won (equivalent to R$ 2 million).
The mobilization was organized by the DX division union, which has about 28 thousand members. It is expected that between 2,000 and 3,000 workers will attend the event in Suwon. The DX division is responsible for producing Samsung's consumer goods, including Galaxy smartphones, televisions, and home appliances. A previous protest last month saw sector employees attending work dressed in black, as reported by the GSMArena portal.
Impact of the semiconductor agreement
A union spokesperson stated that the demonstration will take place during this year's salary negotiations, serving as a way to protest what was characterized as unequal treatment given to the consumer device division. The discontent arises after the agreement reached with the Device Solutions (DS) division, Samsung's semiconductor segment. Following threats of a strike, workers in this sector obtained a new performance-linked bonus model.
This agreement stipulates that 10.5% of the division's annual operating profit will be allocated to forming a bonus fund, with the majority of this amount paid in the company's own shares. This provision was crucial in preventing a shutdown that could affect one of Samsung's most vital areas during this period of high demand for memory chips such as DRAM, HBM, and NAND. The semiconductor division was instrumental in raising the company's stock value to $1 trillion last month.
Samsung's financial projections
Samsung is expected to release its second-quarter earnings projections this week, covering the period from April to June. There is a forecast of a strong increase in operating profit, driven primarily by the recovery of the memory chip market and growing demand related to artificial intelligence. Due to the industry's focus on AI and high demand, Samsung is expected to achieve revenue close to $217 billion (approximately R$ 1.5 trillion) this year, surpassing the cumulative total of the last 40 years. This figure was cited by Kim Yong-kwan, president of the semiconductor division.
This outlook highlights the disparity between the different divisions. While the semiconductor sector directly benefits from AI advancements, the mobile phone, TV, and home appliance segments face less favorable conditions in internal discussions. Due to scarcity, the prices of these products have been rising since last year, and according to Samsung itself, this trend may worsen in 2027.
