Former French national team player and World Champion Marcel Desailly expressed his approval of the performances of the Bafana Bafana team, as well as African representatives at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, noting that the continent's growing success is positively impacting football.
Achievements of African Teams
The South African team advanced to the playoffs for the first time in its history but was subsequently eliminated after a defeat to co-host Canada in the Round of 32. Morocco qualified for the quarterfinals, defeating Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Egypt hopes for a sensation against reigning champion Argentina to reach the final eight on Tuesday evening (Saudi time).
Desailly's View on Progress
Even if Egypt cannot advance further, Desailly believes that this tournament has already been exceptionally positive for African representatives. He told IOL via sportscasting.com: 'I am happy for South Africa, as well as all the African teams, from which potentially only three can continue to play.'
Desailly added that he was pleased with South Africa's success but realistically assessed their chances, believing they would not be able to go beyond the Round of 16. He noted that they are part of a group of teams that showed very good results and wondered if there was another team that could reach the final and bring pride to the African continent.
Morocco's Historic Experience
Morocco became the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and will meet the 2018 champions, France, again on Thursday for a spot in the final four. Desailly emphasized that no African team had previously reached the final, and that only Morocco showed excellent results in 2022. He concluded that the statistics are simply amazing, and that more successful performances by African teams on the biggest stage need to be seen, which will be beneficial for both football and the entire continent.
