American Hospital Dubai Conducts First Robotic Mitral Valve Repair Surgery in Dubai

The patient, a 60-year-old male, suffered from degenerative mitral valve disease. His condition progressed from moderate to severe despite medication and continuous monitoring. The mitral valve, located between the left atrium (upper chamber) and the left ventricle (lower chamber) of the heart, regulates blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle. In this case, the damaged valve did not close properly, causing blood to flow backward into the atrium, known as mitral regurgitation, which necessitated valve repair.

After careful evaluation, the cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery teams at American Hospital Dubai offered the patient three treatment options: standard mitral valve repair via medial sternotomy (a cut through the breastbone down the center of the chest), minimally invasive repair via small right thoracotomy (a cut between the ribs on the right side of the chest), or robotic repair (performed through small incisions between the ribs instead of opening the chest cavity).
