Although it is often believed that air pollution increases the risk of respiratory diseases, health experts have warned about a more serious threat. Recent studies have shown that tiny particles, such as PM2.5, affect not only the respiratory system but also have a direct impact on hair and scalp.
Impact of Microparticles on Hair
These fine particles are so small that they easily penetrate the hair follicles on the scalp, leading to hair loss problems and deterioration of hair quality. In this regard, doctors have advised taking several precautions.
Oxidative Stress and Hair Weakness
Dr. Samir Bansal, a pulmonologist and respiratory medicine specialist from Apollo Hospital in Bangalore, noted that PM2.5 is not ordinary dust. Its size allows it to overcome the protective barriers of the nose and upper respiratory tract, reaching deep parts of the lungs. He emphasized that one should not limit oneself to symptoms like coughing or breathing problems, because the 'inflammatory load' of pollutants affects other organs, causing oxidative stress and inflammatory reactions in the body.
