The South African Agricultural Awards (SAAA) have announced an extension of the application deadline to Friday, July 31, 2026. This provides farmers, agribusinesses, educational institutions, innovators, and agricultural organizations with additional time to nominate for the current year.
Announcement and Goals of the Awards
The extension was announced during a recent SAAA breakfast held in partnership with AgriSETA, the main sponsor of the awards. Industry representatives at the event emphasized the importance of recognizing achievements to strengthen inclusivity, innovation, and competitiveness across the entire agricultural value chain.
Significance of Agriculture
SAAA Chairperson and AgriSETA Risk Management Director, Kubhe Ndlovu, stated that these awards serve as a national platform to recognize individuals and organizations whose work contributes to the growth and transformation of agriculture. She noted that agriculture is the foundation of the nation, a source of livelihood, and the lifeblood of many rural communities.
According to her, the SAAA awards aim to acknowledge a wide range of contributions—from farmers expanding domestic and international markets, to researchers improving yields, mentors supporting emerging farmers, and institutions developing agricultural skills. The goal of these awards is to celebrate excellence while simultaneously enhancing the competitiveness, inclusivity, and sustainability of agriculture.
Categories and Youth Support
The SAAA awards include categories that recognize innovation in agriculture, agritechnology, farm diversification, agri-tourism, forestry, skills development, youth participation, educational institutions, and influential figures in the agricultural sector. Ndlovu particularly stressed the importance of the program in encouraging the participation of women, youth, and people with disabilities in the sector as farmers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and industry leaders.
In connection with Youth Month, it was noted that the future of agriculture depends on the opportunities created today. By honoring successful agricultural careers and enterprises, the awards can inspire young people to choose agriculture as a profession, develop skills, engage in entrepreneurship, and build sustainable businesses.
Changing Perceptions of the Profession
AgriSETA Executive Director Fanny Petla stated that there needs to be a change in the perception of agriculture as merely a fallback option. She emphasized that the industry is evolving through the adoption of technology, GPS, and smart farming, and that the view of this sector by young people must change.
A farmer from Gauteng, Musa Sono, told the assembly that recognizing young farmers can help dispel the notion that farming is only for older people or those without other career prospects. He urged young farmers to document their work and use social media to showcase their journey to inspire others.
Recognition Beyond the Farm
Manti Maifadi, owner of Naledi Farms in Gauteng and a recipient of the SAAA Agri-tourism Award 2025, noted that recognition helped broaden the understanding of agriculture beyond mere production. He believes that agriculture is connected not only to what is grown but also to establishing connections between people and the land.
SAAA strongly urges all stakeholders in the value chain—individuals, companies, institutions, and organizations—to submit their applications before the extended deadline of July 31, 2026.
