The Cabinet Committee on Appointments has officially approved the appointment of veteran physicist Professor Umesh V. Waghmare as the new Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India. Professor Waghmare will hold this position from the date of assuming office until he reaches the age of 60.
Transition to New Role
He takes up this important leadership position after a vacancy arose in April when the then Secretary, Professor Abhay Karandikar, was appointed as a member of the NITI Aayog. Until Professor Waghmare officially took office a few days ago, Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), temporarily held this post as an additional responsibility.
Scientific Experience and Education
Professor Waghmare brings rich experience in science and research to the DST. Prior to this appointment, he served as President and Professor at the Division of Theoretical Sciences at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) in Bengaluru. His distinguished academic journey began with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Engineering Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in 1990. He subsequently earned a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Yale University in 1996, followed by postdoctoral research at Harvard University from 1996 to 2000.
