Thousands of undocumented Zimbabwean citizens found themselves in extremely inhumane conditions after the Department of Home Affairs' voluntary repatriation center was closed. These individuals were left in an open field near Langa railway station in Epping, Cape Town.
Repatriation Operation and Government Reaction
As the coordinated humanitarian operation to return foreigners is moved to Musina, the government faces criticism for an 'inhumane' process, as thousands of people remain without assistance. The oversight committee for internal affairs is expected to conduct an urgent two-day visit to check the situation.
The Western Cape government announced on Sunday that it had 'successfully completed' providing assistance to foreigners who voluntarily decided to return to their countries, in collaboration with municipalities, national departments, humanitarian organizations, religious partners, and law enforcement agencies. It was stated that all individuals who approached municipal institutions and Department of Home Affairs offices in Cape Town left the area after thorough vetting, registration, and logistical planning conducted by the department and its partners, for which numerous buses were procured.
