Anneri Senecal has become the first woman in the history of the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden (SUBG) to be appointed as curator. She took on this position after serving as acting curator for nine months.
Appointment and Responsibilities
Senecal officially started her duties on Wednesday, July 1st. Prior to this, she served as the acting curator for nine months following the death of the former curator, Dr. Donovan Kirkwood, in 2025. During this period, she oversaw the daily operations of the garden, continuing to work as an assistant curator, helping manage plant collections and support staff, and ensuring public access to one of the Stellenbosch University's most prominent public spaces.
Experience and Career Path
Senecal shared that one of the most challenging aspects was overcoming the loss of Kirkwood, whom she described as a respected leader and mentor. She noted: 'Besides losing a respected leader, I lost a mentor who played a key role in shaping my passion for plant conservation and understanding the vital role botanical gardens play in nature and society.'
