South Africa is experiencing a sharp increase in laboratory-confirmed measles cases. A total of 2476 cases have been registered since the end of December 2025.
Disease spread by province
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported that from December 29, 2025, to June 21, 2026 (ISO weeks 1–25), 2476 confirmed measles cases were recorded nationwide. NICD specified that several additional cases were identified following the previous report.
The Free State province registered the highest number of new cases (132), followed by the Western Cape (58), Gauteng (46), North Cape (44), Limpopo (36), Mpumalanga (28), Eastern Cape (20), KwaZulu-Natal (6), and North West (4).
Demographics and epidemiology
Most registered cases involved children aged 1 to 14 years (1749 out of 2476; 70.6%), but there has also been an increase in confirmed cases among people over 15 years old (437 out of 2476; 17.7%). NICD noted that this indicates ongoing transmission of measles in communities and a possible immunity gap in older age groups, which requires further study to improve public health measures.
