A new study conducted by the University of the Western Cape (UWC) revealed that firefighters suffer from inhalation of combustion products as a result of their professional activities. These specialists often arrive first at fire scenes and other emergencies.
Lung Health Study Results
According to the data, more than half of the surveyed firefighters reported respiratory symptoms, which may indicate occupational risks associated with repeated smoke exposure. The study, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, examined the lung condition of 278 firefighters from the Cape Town Fire Service.
It was found that over half of the participants (53.6%) experienced at least one respiratory symptom. The most common complaints were coughing (reported by 54.4%) and nasal congestion (nearly 41%). It was also noted that firefighters aged 30 to 49 years reported these symptoms more frequently compared to younger or older colleagues.
