Despite the Bafana Bafana team's campaign at the FIFA World Cup 2026 ending in disappointment across the country, one happy South African resident considers himself incredibly lucky after attending his third World Cup opening ceremony and fifth tournament participation.
Trip to Mexico
A teacher from Randburg, Thevan Pillay, who hails from Chatsworth, was selected among the privileged fans by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to attend the national team of South Africa's first match against co-host Mexico at the famous Estadio Azteca stadium.
This was not Pillay's first trip to a major sporting event. This trip marked his third attendance at a World Cup opening ceremony; previously, he had seen France in 1998 and the historic 2010 event in his home country, South Africa.
Fan History and Coaching Career
As a dedicated football fan, Pillay has lived for football his entire life. In his youth, he played for the Mobeni Heights Football Club and remains known in the local football administrative community. Throughout his teaching career, he coached school football and currently trains athletes at his school in Randburg, as well as the U13 district team.
