South African Teacher Enjoyed the Atmosphere of the FIFA World Cup

The dream of attending the World Cup arose during a casual conversation with colleagues during an inter-school football match. Pillay recalled: 'We simply couldn't afford international travel on a teacher's salary back then.' He continued: 'In the end, when others started declining due to various commitments, I was the only one fully ready to go. Teachers didn't earn much back then, so I took an extra mortgage extension on my house and flew to France in 1998. Once you experience your first World Cup, you get hooked instantly. After that came the 2010 opening ceremony in South Africa, and now this wonderful opportunity in Mexico.'

Getting the Ticket and Impressions

Pillay stated that he did not initially plan to secure a ticket for the opening ceremony itself. 'At first, I planned to try to attend a few matches in the United States with friends I made when I lived there several years ago, and see my granddaughter who lives in New York,' he said. 'However, I decided to enter the contest run by the department and just hoped for the best, like everyone else.'

The news that changed his life reached him in the middle of a lesson at school. 'A friend contacted me while I was in class and said that the name on the winners list looked exactly like mine,' Pillay recounted. 'We are naturally skeptical of what is published on social media, so I decided to wait. Only when the official phone call came confirming that I was indeed one of the winners did happiness truly set in.'

Pillay described the vibrant atmosphere in Mexico City as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. 'The opening ceremony was fantastic, with an incredible amount of cultural events, singing, and dancing,' he noted. 'It was a thirty-minute walk to the stadium. The language barrier was slightly noticeable, but the locals were surprisingly friendly. The guys we walked with were Mexicans, and they explained that the crowds came from different parts of Mexico, which highlighted how diverse the population is.'

Reaction to Match Results

Reflecting on South Africa's elimination after a tense 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32, the veteran coach did not hide his disappointment. 'I had incredibly high hopes,' Pillay admitted. 'As coaches, we all naturally become managers and tacticians when watching from the stands, but they got it wrong again. They made a mistake in the first match with a new formation where they played five defenders and retreated too deep against a team like Mexico. I would change that.'

He added: 'Against Canada, they underestimated their opponent. The Canadians showed a much greater hunger for victory, while our guys looked a bit overconfident and were ultimately outplayed. Canada had a plan; they knew exactly what we were going to do, and they beat us. However, it remains very encouraging that we have such a young national squad, which gives us a great foundation for the future.'

Pillay intends to personally witness this footballing future. 'Any World Cup you attend turns into a huge party,' he smiled. 'I have certain plans to attend a few more editions in the coming years. Once this virus bites you, you want to experience this opening ceremony atmosphere as much as possible, although time and budget will dictate.'
